I took Bandit to the dog park today. Unfortunately we couldn't stay very long because a thunderstorm was rolling in, the wind picked up and it started to ran so everyone ran to their cars, but now the weather seems to be just threatening. Bandit hadn't pooped for two days and it was definitely on my mind, so the trip got off to a rollicking good start when, upon entrance to the park, Bandit took two gigantic dumps. I kept him on the leash for a while and walked around, meeting the dogs that came up to us, by trying to have him adjust to staying close to me even when exciting things are going on around us. Eventually a big white dog named Wallace came up to us, and just wouldn't leave Bandit alone. Wallace was a boy, his very obvious balls let me know that, so I don't think it was a romantic interest (not that I would mind if it was) but Wallace definitely wanted to play. He was hopping and dancing circles around Bandit while Bandit got his bearings. I could tell Bandit wanted to dance with him too, but didn't know how. His body went stiff, but his tail was waging. I gave them their space and within no time the two of them were bounding, jumping, bounding, and pouncing around the park in good sport. Bandit made a few other friends, a little dog who was rolling around on the ground, and a feisty, no-nonsense yellow one. Then the wind picked it up and we all went running for the exit.
Seeing as how well today went, I think we will go back tomorrow with some treats and balls, and really spend some time there. It'd be a great place to work on fetch. But I was pleasantly surprised to note that Bandit came most of the times I called him, or he came very shortly after, and he got along splendidly with everyone.
Hurrah, a success!
